Permanent cosmetics enhance your natural features by implanting small droplets of pigment into the dermal layer of your skin. Because this is a tattooing process, proper preparation and follow-up visits are important. You can also learn more about how permanent cosmetics work before your appointment.
At The Permanent Cosmetic & Lash Studio in Chadds Ford, PA, procedures are performed by Carmella Davies and Kristina Bray. Carmella has specialized in permanent cosmetics since 1999 and is double board-certified by the American Academy of Micropigmentation and the Society of Permanent Cosmetic Professionals.
Plan for Your Required Visits
Two visits are critical for all permanent cosmetic procedures. Carmella or Kristina can’t perform your procedure unless you’re committed to completing both visits.
Healing times between appointments include:
- Four weeks for eyebrows and eyeliner
- Six weeks for lips, scars, and camouflage procedures
- Up to four visits for heavier eyeliner
- A third visit for full-face procedures involving the eyebrows, eyeliner, and lips
There is an additional fee for each procedure visit.
Before Your Appointment
Please review these instructions before your procedure:
- Tell us about all medications and topical products you use.
- Let us know if you use Retin-A, Renova, Accutane, Latisse, or another eyelash growth serum.
- Tell us about any allergies to topical products.
- Don’t stop using a prescribed medication unless your healthcare provider instructs you to do so.
- Don’t make social plans for the day of your procedure or the following day.
- Contact lenses can’t be worn during an eyeliner procedure.
- Bring glasses to wear after an eyeliner appointment.
A scratch test for possible allergies is available at any time, although it isn’t required by law.
What to Expect During Your Procedure
Before pigment is placed into your skin:
- We’ll discuss your desired makeup style, shape, and color.
- Your proposed enhancement will be drawn on for you to review.
- Topical numbing agents will be used to help make the procedure as comfortable and tolerable as possible.
Sanitation and Safety
Your health and safety are important throughout every procedure.

Preparing for Permanent Eyebrows
Two visits are critical for creating a natural-looking eyebrow enhancement.
Before your appointment:
- Don’t wax your eyebrows.
- Leave your natural brow growth intact.
- Plan for four weeks of healing between visits.
Preparing for Permanent Eyeliner
Two visits are critical for creating a natural lash-enhancement eyeliner. Eyeliner is customized to your features and preferences, so results vary from person to person.
Before your appointment:
- Don’t use Latisse or other eyelash serums for two weeks.
- Remove your contact lenses before the procedure.
- Bring glasses to wear afterward.
- Plan for four weeks of healing between visits.
Heavier eyeliner can require up to four visits. An additional fee applies to each visit.
Preparing for Permanent Lip Color
Permanent lip color requires two visits and six weeks of healing before the final color and result can be evaluated.
Anyone who has experienced a cold sore or fever blister, even once, should contact their physician before the procedure. Lip enhancement can activate the herpes virus.
Ask your physician about medications such as:
- Zovirax
- Valtrex
- Famvir
Medication may need to begin up to three days before the procedure and continue for up to seven days afterward. Your physician will determine the appropriate medication, dosage, and timing.
Abreva, which is available over the counter, may also be advisable.
What to Expect During Healing
Your permanent cosmetics will look darker and more vivid before the area heals.
During the healing process:
- The treated area will appear very vivid for the first few days.
- Eyebrows, eyeliner, and lips may look crusty after the first week.
- The pigment will appear much lighter after the crusting stage.
- The color will gradually return during the four to six weeks of healing.
- SPF 15 or higher is required daily and consistently, including during the winter.
- Color boosts are generally recommended every one to five years.
