Why Permanent Makeup Is a Process — Not a One-Time Appointment
By Carmella Davies
After more than two decades in permanent cosmetics and thousands of procedures, I can tell you one thing with complete confidence: permanent makeup is a process. It’s not something that should ever feel rushed, and it’s rarely something that should be completed in a single appointment.
When clients first come to see me, they’re often excited—but also a little nervous. And I completely understand that. We’re working on your face, after all. Because of that, I approach permanent cosmetics thoughtfully: start conservatively, respect the skin, and build gradually.
Permanent makeup is both technical and artistic—but the most important thing to remember is that the skin is the canvas, and every canvas behaves differently.
The Skin Is the Canvas
Every person’s skin tells a story. Age, sun exposure, skin type, previous procedures, and natural pigment all influence how the skin responds to permanent cosmetics.
That’s why permanent makeup should not always be completed in a single appointment.
Overworking the skin can lead to:
- Irritation
- Unpredictable healing
- Results that appear unnatural
My role isn’t just to place pigment—it’s to protect the integrity of the skin while creating beautiful results.
This is why I layer permanent makeup over multiple visits. Each session allows:
- Healing assessment
- Pigment evaluation
- Controlled refinement
It’s a slower approach—but it produces the most natural, refined results.
Why We Start Conservatively
Permanent makeup is also a process of building trust.
Even clients who have wanted it for years often feel cautious at first—and that’s completely normal.
Starting conservatively allows you to:
- Ease into the change
- See how your skin heals
- Adjust the result gradually
It’s very common for clients to return and say:
“I love it… but I think I want a little more.”
That’s exactly how it should work. We build step by step until it feels just right.
Brows: Balance and Subtle Structure
Brows are one of the most requested services—and one of the most transformative.
The goal is never harsh or overpowering brows. Instead, we aim to:
- Restore balance
- Add structure
- Enhance natural features
Most clients begin with:
- Soft hair-like strokes
- Light shading in sparse areas
From there, we can gradually add depth and definition if desired.
This approach keeps brows:
- Elegant
- Balanced
- Natural-looking
Eyes: The Most Delicate Area
The skin around the eyes is extremely delicate, which makes patience essential.
I often begin with a lash enhancement, which:
- Adds subtle definition
- Makes lashes appear fuller
- Brightens the eyes
From there, clients may choose to build toward:
- A slightly thicker liner
- A soft wing
- A more defined look
Even more dramatic eyeliner requires layering to ensure:
- Proper healing
- Balanced results
- Long-term skin health
Lips: Restoring Color and Shape
Lips are another area where layering is key.
Over time, lips can:
- Lose natural color
- Lose definition at the border
Lip blush helps restore:
- Soft color
- Shape and symmetry
- A more youthful appearance
Because lips are sensitive, pigment develops gradually. Multiple sessions allow us to:
- Refine tone
- Adjust saturation
- Keep results soft and flattering
Trust the Process
After decades of experience, I’ve seen what happens when permanent makeup is done too aggressively or too quickly—and it’s not ideal.
Permanent makeup should:
- Enhance your natural features
- Look effortless
- Age beautifully over time
When you understand that it’s a process, it removes pressure from the first appointment. Instead, we work together to create something truly beautiful.
Patience always leads to the most elegant results.
